What is Stress?
Swift take a “systemic” perspective on stress, which we understand to be a mixture of experience, perceptions and symptoms arising from individuals within their work and other social contexts.
The word “stress” is a shorthand label our society has developed to describe a set of ideas about ill health, a lack of coping mechanisms and physical and emotional reactions to various factors in the environment.
We believe it’s useful to think of stress symptoms as a communication about the ‘fit’ between individuals and their environment. Typical symptoms of a ‘lack of fit’ in a workplace are feelings or perceptions of:
- Being bullied
- Being out of control and not on top of one’s job
- Not being listened to or valued
- Being a failure (despite a past history of success).
These feelings may often be accompanied by physical, emotional and behavioural reactions that can have severe consequences.
How Swift Counselling can help you?
We will look at the wider contexts of a person’s family, work and social life to enable the client to better understand where there is a ‘lack of fit’ between them and their environment. Then we tailor our use of various approaches to make that ‘fit’ a better one. For instance we may use:
- Cognitive Behavioural therapy (CBT) to counteract unhelpful self-beliefs such as being a failure
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to address issues like bullying
- Coaching to enable a person to express their concerns constructively, rather than get very angry and ‘out of control’
- Teach self-regulating techniques to help a client relax and de-stress in a particular ‘stressful’ environment.
